Michael John Davis Bio

In 1969, after interning in the Typography and Design Department at the Government Printing Office and receiving a degree in Commercial Art, Michael John Davis began his career as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator in Washington, D.C.

Since then his illustrations have appeared on hundreds of magazine covers and his editorial art in a myriad of other publications. Davis has illustrated satellites for NASA and books for McGraw Hill. He has designed numerous logos, both corporate and private, and has won awards for cover design and editorial layout. Throughout his professional career, Davis has also crafted fine art.

Today, Davis and his wife, Mary, live on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Welded steel sculptures dot the gardens of their home, and regional galleries exhibit works in gouache, acrylic, alkyds and pen ink. He also creates Christmas themed Automata and clocks, one of which he raffles off each Christmas with proceeds going to a local charity. From his studio in Kitty Hawk, Davis has developed an impressive array of techniques. His images range from highly stylized brightly colored three dimensional constructions that graphically capture his imagination to quiet meditations based on simply looking through a boat house door. Davis is an accomplished draftsman, painter and sculptor. And he very successfully applies those skills in creating both the illusion of, and real three-dimensional space.
